Sample all 24 of our stains with this convenient sampler pack! Each sample holds 1 teaspoon of stain (approximately 5-10 grams). Total weight of stain is about 140 grams. Included is a printout of our Stain Mixing Chart with all the stain recipes for your convenience.
Specially formulated for making colored clay, Mitten Ceramic Stains are guaranteed to give you the results you're looking for. These stains can also be mixed into slip, terra sigillata, engobes, white underglaze, and even used as glaze colorants.
Color results will vary depending on the base clay you choose to create your colored clay from. White porcelain will give the most vivid results. White stoneware can also be used but colors will be less vivid. Buff stoneware can be used to achieve toned down colors. The color shown is the expected result in oxidation firings up to cone 10. Results vary slightly in a reduction atmosphere.
Blender method: Provides the most evenly distributed color. Mix stain, clay, and water in a blender. Once blended, pour the mixture onto plaster and let it dry until it reaches the right consistency for wedging.
Wedging Method: Create a thick paste with stain and water and wedge thoroughly into moist clay.
Always wear a well-fitted respirator with P-100 filters when working with powdered stains. Only use in a well ventilated area or outside. All stains are lead free and non toxic.

Pleased with all of the color options. Had thought for the price they would be about double the size they are - I believe it says a tsp’s worth and none of them have had more than a half tsp in them when measured. So thats not ideal. Colors seem good but again hard to tell with such a minimal amount to work with. Probably would have been better off just buying 6 or 7 quarter lb bags from my local ceramic shop and mixing them to make more colors. Mason stains there price varies by color but can be anywhere from $4-$16 per quarter lb. So, all that to say this seems overpriced for as little as you get but they are pretty and it is a little satisfying to get a box filled with a rainbow of tiny bags of stain.
Hi Dawn, Thanks for your review and we're glad you enjoyed the colors! We do scoop the stains into each bag with a teaspoon scoop and level it flat. The stains might compact down when we squeeze air out of the bags and during shipping, but they definitely do contain a full teaspoon. The nice thing about our stains is that they will give you predictable colors, whereas there is a lot of guesswork involved with mason stains. There are only a limited number of mason stains that will work to color clay/slip/underglaze but all of ours will (and you even get our recipes for free!). We truly appreciate you giving us a try and wish you the best on your colorful ceramics journey!
Beautiful results. I used the stain to color clay for dolls that I am making. They turned out beautiful, I love the colors.
I love these stains so much! I actually prefer using them instead of underglazes to paint details onto my pottery. It’s waaay more affordable than underglaze these days. I just mix a teaspoon of stain into 7grams of white underglaze, And it gives me the perfect saturation and opacity! This sampler pack is perfect cause I can have a huge variety of colors! I love it!
